  38. Yes, it's too good to be true. Like anything else, you get what you pay for.

  40. While upgrading a 486 processor with a pentium chip will increase performance,
  41. you will be disappointed because, while the 486 chip is a high-performance chip,
  42. the pentium is really supercharged and the 486 moboard is not bulit for that
  43. kind of action.

  45. My advice is to spend your hard earned $$$ on a good brand name moboard such as
  46. Intel, SuperMicro, Tyan, or Micronics built for high speed pentium processors.
  47. Be sure to get one that has ZIF  (zero insertion force) socket so that you can
  48. upgrade with faster processors when they come out.

  50. I cannot believe how fast prices are dropping on pentium chips. 133 chips are
  51. selling for almost 50% less than a year ago. I hear that even the 150 and 166
  52. chips will drop 25% this year because Intel is going to be shipping 200+ speed
  53. chips this summer!

  55. Right now you can replace a 90 MHz chip with a 150 MHz OverDrive processor for
  56. less than $500. With a ZIF socket you can do it in less than 10 seconds!

  58. BTW, even if you replace the 66 MHz chip with a 166 MHz processor, it will not
  59. give you the performance equaivalent to a 166 MHz configured machine. The chip
  60. is only  part of the performance optimization process for any particular high
  61. performance system.
